Taking photographs using the rotating stand setup

Once you have setup the rotating stand studio, it's now time to start taking pictures of the target model.

Place the model on top of the rotating disc with the best view facing the camera. Try to place it as close to the center of the disc as possible. Then make any necessary adjustments to the camera to make sure that it fully covers the model along with the the markings on the disc. Now ,we are ready for the photo shoot.

The process of taking the photographs is quite straight forward. The disc has to be rotated at small angles, and photographs taken at the different angles of rotation. The rotation has to be done from 0 degree (front of the model) to a full 180 degrees (back of the model). You don't have to measure it. Just stop when you feel that the back of the model is now fully facing the camera (see below two images).

There are three important rules to be followed while rotating:
  1. There should be no shaking of the model or the camera as the disc is rotated. The camera and the model should remain at their fixed position throughout the entire process. The position of the stand should also be fixed, except for the disc which has to be rotated.
  2. Rotation should always be in the clockwise direction so the markings always move from right to left in subsequent images(see below 2 images).

  3. The angle of rotation between subsequent photographs should be small. Excellent results can be obtained by taking photographs at increments of 5 to 10 degrees. Smaller the angles of rotation, more the number of photographs and better would be the output model.
Important Even if you go a little higher on the rotation, do not cross the angle between two subsequent markings (which would be approximately 45 degrees). IBModeler can't keep track of the angle of rotation in such a case and will give unpredictable results. The images below visually demonstrate the scenario that should be avoided.

Once all the photographs are taken, store them in a common folder on your computer. We are now ready to use IBModeler to create a 3D model using these photographs.
