Advantages and Limitations of the rotating stand setup
Advantages
-
Simple setup
The rotating stand setup was designed in an attempt to
make the process of capturing photographs of models with the simplest possible
setup that individuals can create easily at home with some readily available
parts. In essence it requires a digital camera, any kind of rotating disc or
turn table which acts as the base stand for the model and a background screen
which could be a cloth, a cardboard or any other appropriately painted
background.
-
Model covered from most angles
By rotating the stand by 5-10 degrees
between every photograph, the shape of the model is captured from all around
it, giving IBModeler a fair amount of inputs to recreate it's shape in 3D.
-
No calculations required on the part of the user
This setup is very well integrated with IBModeler 2.0, so that
the user only needs to do a few mouse clicks, while IBModeler does all the
required calculations to find out the camera location and view direction for each of
the photographs.
Limitations
-
Model not covered from all angles
With the rotating setup, we are only able to supply photographs
taken by moving all around the model in one horizontal plane. No photographs are taken from
the top, bottom or other angles which might be critical in determining the shapes of
specific parts of certain models. As a result, some shapes might not get replicated given the limited side only views.
